The Stop Snoring Program And My Sleep Apnea?

Growing up, I loved going on trips, especially ski trips with my friends. Except one problem always came with me.

Any kind of overnight visit meant driving everyone else crazy with my snoring due to my mild sleep apnea.  It was mortifying.  So, I would end up trying to find a place away from everyone else to sleep since no one could get any sleep with me around.

I lived with this problem for well over 20 years.  It entered our marriage at least at night.  I would again find another place to sleep every night to allow my wife to also sleep.

It’s difficult to diagnose without help if you are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. Maybe you’ve heard the joke about a husband insisting he does not have a snoring problem when he tries to tell his wife, “I’m positive I don’t snore because I stayed awake all last night and I didn’t snore even once.”

One of the best ways to find out out if you are experiencing obstructive sleep apnea requiring a sleep apnea study is to have your sleeping mate, family member, or friend observe you while you sleep. Sleep Apnea – The Silent Sleep Disorder

One of the most common sleep disorders in the world is sleep apnea, affecting millions of people each year. Sleep apnea occurs when a person stops breathing while they are asleep, for at least 10 seconds according to many medical journals. This can happen multiple times during the night, sometimes resulting in the person awakening and sometimes with the person remaining asleep but acting restless during the night.

Sleep apnea can result in chronic fatigue for the person affected by the condition. Because the person’s inability to breathe is disrupting their sleep at night, whether they awaken or not, the person is not getting the quality sleep that will allow them to awake refreshed in the morning. Ideally each of us needs 3 hours of uniterrupted sleep for our bodys to properly recharge and repair itself during the night. Constant interruption of this resting and healing phase while we’re asleep can cause the sufferer constant hardship through extreme fatigue. The persons health will also start to suffer after several months of such problems. After consecutive nights of this occurring, the person will become fatigued, irritable, and drowsy during the day.

Type 2 Diabetes is an escalating health issue worldwide and affects 18 million Americans.  A large percentage of sufferers are also suspected to be affected by Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a condition caused by inadequate airflow during sleep.  The relationship between OSA and Diabetes is becoming increasingly apparent.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea describes breaks in the normal sleeping pattern; a series of breathing arrests caused by the airway being partially or totally collapsed due to obstruction, either by the uvula (the small pendulum at the back of the throat) or by fatty tissue in the neck and throat.  These breaks might last anything from 10 up to 120 seconds, causing a drop in oxygen levels and can occur several hundred times throughout the night; presenting a risk of a number of serious cardio vascular diseases as well as Type 2 Diabetes.

A sleep apnea test is normally done in a sleep lab. However, just as with everything else, technology is making this aspect of testing for sleep apnea easier. The home testing market is growing for those who suspect they may have sleep apnea. In 2007 the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) rethought their policy and now they approve the use of home tests for those who are eligible. Along with the AASM, insurance plans such as Medicare and Medicaid are also approving payment for the tests.
