Discovering the Basics of Sleep Apnea

To find out if someone suffers from sleep apnea, it is important to first understand what the condition really is. The term apnea comes from a Greek word meaning “without breath.” When you put the two together, you have someone who suffers from lack of breathing during sleep. There are actually three different types of apnea: obstructive, mixed and central. Regardless of the type the patient suffers from, all patients seem to have the same major complaint. Patients who suffer from this condition will actually stop breathing, for up to ten seconds at a time, while they are sleeping. This is a recurring condition that will happen up to 100 times each sleeping session.

The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when there is a blockage in the airway. This is usually caused by the soft tissues, in the posterior of the throat, collapsing. The main culprit of this condition is usually the patients tongue. In contrast, central sleep apnea (CSA) is not caused by a blockage at all. This type is caused by the brain failing to send the body the signal to breathe. Just as the name implies, mixed sleep apnea (MSA) is a combination of the two. Besides the patient experiencing a lack of oxygen during sleep, another problem is that the brain actually has to somewhat awaken the patient each time to get them to breathe. While the patient does not fully wake up, and therefore does not realize it is happening, this slight awakening is obstructive enough to normal sleeping patterns that the patient is not receiving the adequate amount of rest their body needs each sleeping session.

How To Detect And Identify Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Many of us are unfortunately aware of the things that can clutter up an otherwise happy and healthy life. Disease, disaster, accidents all have a way of showing up when least expected. Most of these announce themselves relatively clearly, giving us at least an idea of what to do about them.

Some things don’t announce themselves so clearly. They sneak in and do their damage in stealth, giving no indication of their presence. Sleep apnea is one of these conditions.

Central Sleep Apnea?A Simple Explanation

In sleep disorders, obstructive sleep apnea is the most common condition that’s seen, but a significant number of people with obstructive sleep apnea will also have central sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea is thought to be a condition that’s associated with a number of different neurologic problems, as well as heart or kidney failure. During the night, people with central sleep apnea stop breathing when signals in the brain that tells the body to breathe don’t work properly. No effort is even made to inhale. In contrast, with obstructive sleep apnea, an effort is made to breathe in, but because of collapse in the upper airways, air can’t get into the lungs.

One of the hallmarks of central sleep apnea is Cheyne-Stokes breathing, where after a long pause, due to gradually increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), shallow breathing is triggered which gradually becomes deeper and deeper, and then once CO2 reaches a safer level, the breathing becomes more shallow again.

WHAT IS SNORING?
———————–
There may still be other reasons why the snoring comes at night. And also that it could have been only the way to release exhaustion unconsciously..It can actually happen anytime of the day as we sleep and not just at night. It is also told to be that a person’s air pathways can be larger than normal that it makes the tissues more probe to vibrate as compared to those who have normal sizes of throats.

TYPES OF SNORING
———————–
It leaves your mouth open and tends the throat tissues to vibrate as you inhale and exhale through your mouth. It could be that the back of the tongue is blocking some parts of the passage ways and causes the sound that produces the snoring. The size of the tongue or the position of the tongue when you sleep had to do with it.Snoring while sleeping any time of the day; this state however maybe a little more in question since the snores occur in any time of the day or night the moment you doze off.

Treating for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious disorder that occurs when breathing intermittently starts and then stops during rest. Two types of this disorder are the most common, central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a result of the throat muscles being relaxed and breathing is therefore obstructed. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain does not send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. Warning signs of this disorder include being overweight, having a shirt collar size of more than 17 inches, loud snoring, excessive tiredness during the day, waking up with a dry or sore throat, and irritability. It is interesting to note that many people who suffer from this disorder do not even realize that their slumber is being disrupted.

People who suffer from this disorder stop breathing momentarily while they are sleeping. This can happen up to 70 times in an hour for those with a severe form of this disorder. These lapses in breathing cause insufficient amounts of oxygen to the brain and the patient often wakes with a gasp. The result of interrupted breathing while sleeping is inadequate rest. Further, the health implications of not getting enough rest are sobering.

The doctor warned that not taking immediate remedial action for mild sleep apnea could make the situation worse and in the long term, prove fatal. I think I’ve been having mild sleep deprivation for as long as I can remember so I decided that another week or two won’t make matters any worse. A good night’s sleep would have to wait until I did some research of my own. To begin with, I decided to talk to a few friends about it as well as research the net for possible natural solutions. I’m really glad I did.
