Sleep apnea in children is gaining more attention in the medical community. Although it is still often under diagnosed, it is estimated that up to 12 percent of kids snore and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) affects from one to ten percent of children. While both children and adults can have OSA, it is important to realize that sleep disordered breathing in children can often differ from that of adults in terms of cause, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Since symptoms of OSA in children are generally more subtle than those in adults with less distinctive and loud snoring, the recognition and diagnosis of sleep apnea in children requires the awareness of a different set of OSAS characteristics.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by frequent pauses in breathing during sleep. There are three types of apnea exist: central, obstructive and mixed. Obstructive is the most common, causing excessive relaxation of throat muscles, the trachea collapses and blocks the airway. Treatments for apnea are life-style changes, a simple procedure. One of the most common non-invasive treatments for apnea is a pillow.
Sleep pillow is a pillow that is designed to eliminate snoring, as snoring is one of the most common indicators of apnea. Sleep pillows are designed to support the neck, so that the patient turns out (snoring and sleep apnea can worsen), to expand the neck to cradle the head and prevents the tongue from restricting the air, and side sleepers will help to relieve the shoulders and arms.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a health condition whereby there are interruptions in breathing when a person is sleeping. This takes place because the airway is either narrowed or blocked. This pause or interruption in the normal breathing process is referred to as an apnea episode. While brief apnea episodes happen to many people due to the fact that the muscles relax during sleep, if the breathing is interrupted for more than 10 seconds at a time and it happens repeatedly throughout the night then it has become a problem that needs to be addressed.
Many people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea snore. They do this because air is trying to make its way through a blocked or narrowed passageway. However everyone who snores does not necessary suffer from apnea. It is important to make this distinction.

Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome is a prevalent condition resulting from a decrease in upper airway size and patency during sleep. Apneas, hypopneas and episodes of airflow limitation occur during sleep resulting in physiological changes including reductions in oxygen saturation from sleep. This leads to cessation of the respiratory event, only to be followed by repetitive airflow obstructions. This cause sleeps fragmentation, and secondary daytime symptoms including non-restorative sleep, excessive daytime somnolence, memory loss and other psychometric changes.
It also leads to a rise in sympathetic tone, with secondary changes in blood pressure, pulse and cardiac output. In addition to the nocturnal and daytime symptoms, obstructive sleep apnea may contribute to significant complications including hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Snorers with obstructive sleep apnea have a higher prevalence of hypertension and are at increased risk of postoperative hypertension due to an increased sympathetic tone.

That’s what happened usually, not many sufferers know about sleep apnea problem or if they know, they could be ignoring it until a bedmate demands they do something about their vicious snoring.

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which there are one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Breathing can stop anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes and this often occurs five to thirty times or more per hour. As your body realizes it is suffocating, it wakens partially, which restores airflow, but disrupts sleep.Sleep apnea is very common, as common as adult diabetes, and affects more than twelve million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Many of these people don’t even know they have it! Risk factors include being male, overweight, and over the age of forty, but sleep apnea can strike anyone at any age, even children. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form and is caused by a blockage of the airways. This usually occurs when the tissues of the neck and throat collapse during sleep. Obstruction occurs in the passageways at the back of the mouth and the nose, ultimately not allowing the proper flow of air during breathing. What most people do not realize is that the tongue is the most common cause ot the obstruction and the tongue needs to be addressed in any effective treatment protocols. The obstruction occurs in the collapsible part of the airway where the upper throat and the tongue meet the uvula and the soft plate. A new study has linked sleep apnea, also called sleep-disordered breathing, to a significantly greater risk of dying from any cause. Individuals were categorized according to the frequency of recorded respiratory disturbance. Only three participants had severe OSA with an average of 30 or more respiratory disturbances per estimated hour of sleep, while 18 individuals (about 4.7 percent) had moderate to severe OSA with 15 or more respiratory disturbances per hour. Individuals who are poor tend to be obese, a Columbia University profession said in Associated Press report on the CDC study. The researcher said the cheapest foods tend to be higher in calories, and stores offering healthier, more expensive offerings are not always available in poor neighborhoods.There have been many high profile people including NFL Football player Reggie White, who died with a health condition stemming from untreated sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is well overdue for public attention; it is the second leading cause of daytime fatigue, after insomnia. Said to affect some 18 million Americans, sleep apnea is a common, and sometimes dangerous sleep disorder. CPAP (constant positive airway pressure) treatment is one system that has long been used to relieve the symptoms of this condition. By administering a constant, slightly pressurised airflow to the sleep apnea sufferers airway, the symptoms of sleep apnea can be alleviated to some extend. The CPAP machine uses a small air compressor to achieve this aim.
This positive airflow prevents the airway becoming blocked by over relaxed soft tissues, and ensures that air is available to the patient at all times. Many people do, however, find cpap a little uncomfortable. Symptoms such as dry throats and headaches can occur, and exhalation through the mask can be uncomfortable due to the positive air pressure. Luckily, alternatives to cpap do exist, and this report will consider some of the other options.
