I have extreme daytime tiredness and brain fog that is getting worse! What is wrong with me?
I’ve been trying to chase my problem down for years now. Basically my symptoms are, I have terrible memory and am tired all the time.
I cannot pay attention no matter what. Coffee does not help either, it gives me energy but does not re-leave the fog.
Whats scary to me is I’m getting even worse and its almost becoming hard to function. I’m in what feels like a “trance” most of the time – once in a while I do feel “normal” but “damaged”. There was a point in my life where I was actually getting better rapidly but that went away. I also have a very low sex drive and suffer depression – if that makes any difference.
I’m 23, I’ve had this problem for a very long time. I got tested for ADD two years ago, the doc said I didn’t have it (however I have HUGE reservations about that diagnosis for various reasons). 6 months ago I got tested for Sleep Apnea, turns out I have it but its very mild. I’ve been wearing a breather – its not help.
Maybe you have and idea what my problem is? My ideas are
Sleep Apnea – Have it but its very mild
ADD – Tested
Heavy Metal Intoxication – never test
Hypothyroidism – doc says I don’t have it
Food Allergies – Its a possibility, but a weak possibility I think
Vitamin Deficiency – Possible, but I don’t know where to start?
Testosterone Deficiency – Never tested
Just Dumb – Its possible, but I can articulate abstractions extremely well. If I am just dumb no one seems to think so.

Depression causes the ‘memory’ part of the brain to shrink because of the hormonal imbalance. Try doing some mental stretching by using your imagination or remembering tiny details about places you’ve been. Being tired is because your circadian cycle is crazy. Try excercising for about an hour each day (Preferably cardio) after you wake up. That should help. Hope this helps.
Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily. They should be certified as being free of mercury, and if containing vitamin E, it should be shown as from a natural source; otherwise it is synthetic: avoid it! Consume with an orange, or its freshly squeezed juice, or another good antioxidant. Consider taking a 100% natural vitamin B complex, daily. Exercise daily. Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression. Ginseng reputedly boosts energy levels. DO NOT USE IF DIABETIC! Have a high protein breakfast of fish, or scrambled eggs and possibly bacon (these provide a lasting energy boost: no carbohydrates for 2 hrs, or extremely little. I note with interest that the most recent Olympic decathlon gold medalist had scrambled eggs for breakfast. Eat a breakfast containing a reasonable amount of protein, every day, within an hour of arising. http://www.radiantrecovery.com refers.
Most people in modern society today eat a poor diet, with far too much processed foods, contributing to lack of energy, depression, and anxiety. Eat more in accordance with your “nutritional type”:- ( 20 question quiz http://www.naturalhealthcoach.com/tools ) or enter that term in the searchbar at http://www.mercola.com/ (book). Also enter “vitamin B12″ Minimise/eliminate consumption of highly processed foods, particularly grain products, such as white bread, donuts, cake, cookies/biscuits, or anything with sugar. Opt for more wholefoods, non-starchy vegetables (especially broccoli, and spinach, with lemon, or vinegar), and fruit. Have a medical checkup, (thyroid function, adrenals*, etc.) including blood tests, for low iron levels, blood sugar levels, etc. Many people in Western countries are lacking in minerals, such as zinc, magnesium, and calcium, & vitamin D3, (U.S.A. only: INSIST ON the following, or be misled! “The correct test is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D” – “I strongly recommend using LabCorp for these reasons until Quest can guarantee accurate, usable results.” – from http://www.mercola.com – Enter: TEST VALUES FOR VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY in their searchbar ) so it is a good idea to have those levels checked as well.
Fatal Attraction,
You have just described in detail the very symptoms of sleep deprivation. The ultimate cure to what you are experiencing lies within a few good and faithful weeks of deep sleep and a more regular sleep pattern.
This does take a bit of work, but it is WELL worth all the effort. Especially since you can start establishing healthy sleeping patterns early in your adult life.
While this book is recommended to moms of newborns, this author has shed light on many sleep issues as well as simple remedies. Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth is the book you will want to sit down an take in. From sleep studies to long term effects you’ll be amazed at what lack of sleep can do to our bodies.
Doctors say we should get at Least 8 hours of sleep, but the best time (so that our body has time to reguvinate, seperate all the information received, and to rest) is between 8-10 hours of sleep, with 10 hours being the best frame, especially for women (who scientists found require more sleep than men).
Depending on how badly you want to get back to feeling yourself and just plain better, you’ll want to start immediately changing habits in your life that are causing you to not get a good nights rest. the first being, going to bed late, watching tv/computer time up to an hour before bed can interupt immediate rem cycles, working out/eating 2-3 hours before bed, as well as stress and other life issues. Try working a schedule around your best sleeping time and stay with it. It takes 40 days to create a habit so don’t get discouraged. Sleep deprivation isn’t a disease, but it can be crippling if you don’t nip it in the bud.
I wish you the best. And althought this goes against even my own business, you may want to cut out all caffeinated products until you have established a few good nights sleep.
Warmest Regards
Authentically A
