Questions about having your tonsils and adnoids removed?
My son is 3 years old and we just had has sleep study and it came back positive that he has obstructive sleep apnea. He is getting his tonsils and adnoids out next month. I have had mine out, but I was 15. Does anybody have any good suggestions to preparing for the surgery and post care? He is really young, does anyone know of any kids his age who has went through this?

I had mine removed when I was 4. My mom prepared me with chloroseptic and talking to me about the procedure. She also told me I could have as much ice cream as I could eat after the procedure.
I know someone who had their tonsils and adnoids removed, but the child was a few years older than yours. The biggie seemed to be the bloodwork that was needed — kiddo was scared of that. I’d try to think of ways to sooth your son through that, or to distract him from looking at what’s happening during the bloodwork
The dr. that the family had has a policy of keeping all of her patients overnight, regardless of how old, and for one parent to stay with the child at all times (other than during the surgery of course).
When I went to visit, the nursed had brought a tv and video games in, and the kids had lots of cold drinks and freeze pops.
I’d take a favorite stuffed animal or security item for the child, so there is some additional comfort. Afterwards, I believe the child was on limited acitvity for a bout 2 weeks, so I’d also look for games/activities that would allow the child to rest and not require running around (which seems like a heavy task with a 3 year old since they seem to be wired to go-go-go all the time).
I’ve had mine out when I was 5 years old. It’s actually a lot less painful getting them removed at young age. My parents never called it surgery, so I wasn’t afraid to get it done. There were no complications in my case and I could go home the same day. I remember eating lots of ice cream and vanilla puddings. After 4 days or so I could go back to school and eat a bit more.
Ask your doctor if it’s possible or normal to go home the same day, I live in the Netherlands so things might be a bit different.
