When sleep apnea is first diagnosed, whether it’s you, a friend, or family member, the explanation can be a bit startling. Luckily, the remedy is fairly simply and generally effective. And, fortunately, there are many great resources available online to help, from sites that help you get the best fit for a CPAP mask to others that offer checklists for talking to your doctor about distressing symptoms.A diagnosis of sleep apnea must be made by your internist or family practitioner, who may even refer patients to a sleep specialist before a final diagnosis is made. But if you think you or someone in your home may have this condition, general articles about sleep apnea symptoms can be quite helpful as a reference when starting the conversation with your doctor. Here are some places to start:

The American Sleep Apnea Association has a site loaded with articles and videos as well as tools to assess your symptoms and tips for finding resources locallyThe Mayo Clinic website has a nice general overview of classic symptoms, related conditions, causes, and treatmentsType “sleep apnea” into Google

Article by Owen Jones

I wouldn’t worry so much having my bed partner lie on the couch in the living room snoring, as I would if he suffered from sleep apnea, a more serious and harmful disorder. This breathing disorder during sleep that is followed by interrupted and shallow breathing can be treated easily if it is discovered in time and not mistaken for ordinary snoring.

Therefore it is best to understand what sleep apnea and its indications are, so we can help a loved one that is suffering from the disorder of sleep apnea.

You have to know that untreated sleep apnea could hinder you having good sleep at night and make you feel tired, fatigued, mentally exhausted and least productive on the next day. The breathing pauses could last anywhere between 10 to 20 seconds, take place up to 100 times on the same night. This would reduce the amount of the deep natural sleep that is essential for the body to function properly physically and mentally during the daytime.

Most of us know the implications of not having a good night’s sleep and this is no exception for a person with apnea. He/she would suffer from chronic daytime sleepiness, lack of concentration and slow reflexes that could make one have higher risks for accidents.

In addition the long-term consequences of sleep apnea are serious health disorders like diabetes, elevated blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain.

Watch out for symptoms of apnea like loud and chronic snoring, choking, gasping, snorting in sleep and long pauses in breathing. In addition observe if he/she feels tired and sleepy during the day even after protracted hours of sleep at night.

In addition, look out for dry mouth or sore throat on waking up, morning headaches, restlessness, insomnia, grumpiness, bad temper or even depression. Waking up feeling restless, forgetful, with a lack of concentration power and recurrent trips to the toilet at night could be other symptoms.

On noticing these indications consult a specialist. He/she will prescribe an overnight stay in a hospital to observe and diagnose apnea. It is best to understand that just snoring or some of these symptoms does not lead to a diagnosis of apnea.

Snoring could be just ordinary and it does not interfere with the quality and amount of sleep and make one feel chronically fatigued, sleepy or lack of concentration, all of which could lead to accidents. However the job of diagnosing rests with the specialist.

It is a good idea to observe that sleep apnea could be of various types. In an episode of obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissues on the back of the throat relax and block oxygen from entering the lungs during sleep and it causes a brief disturbance of sleep.

However, central apnea is less well-known but more grave and occurs when the brain fails to signal the breath regulating muscles to breathe and this could make one conscious than one has woken up. The most serious of sleep apneas is the amalgamation of both these apnea known as complex sleep apnea.

Believe me, sleep apnea could be easily discovered in the early stages with your bed partner’s help. A sleep diary would help him/her record your snoring, gasping, choking, or other uncommon sounds. In addition a video recording of the patient would help you record symptoms of sleep apnea.

Exactly how ‘s sleep apnea treated? That depends upon the exact reasons for the sleep apnea. Probably the most frequent kind is obstructive apnea, where the muscles of the throat loosen up a whole lot that an airway collapses. Ones own personal doctor may likely suggest not ever attempting to sleep on your own back, losing weight, as well as stopping cigarette smoking. For many people, a basic dental apnea mouthguard which will moves the lower jaw and tongue in a forward direction may possibly be all that’s needed. This exact same apnea mouthguard happens to be, by the way, utilized to stop or minimize loud snoring. There happen to be positive results of folks which suffer from obstructive sleep apnea and also have made use of a snoring mouthguard to scale back or get rid of their particular symptoms. It’s simply because the actual source of ones own blockage is most likely the blocking of their air way by the tongue as well as other soft tissue. In most cases this concern has been effortlessly treated by using these sort of mouth pieces. One of the most frequently used options when it comes to obstructive sleep apnea patients happens to be a CPAP apparatus. A CPAP device advances air flow in and then out of a person’s lung area preventing virtually any blockage and also disruption to do with breathing to come about. Continuous positive airway pressure products are really quite high in price and a lot of people find it is annoying as a result of the mask that should be used. Lots of these people really are excellent subjects for the oral sleep apnea mouth piece alternative. Nevertheless bear in mind the fact that Continuous positive airway pressure commonly is one of the best and most effective alternative if it can end up being accepted. While you’ll find many assorted alternatives when it comes to osa individuals concerning dental appliances, the most common is the mandibular advancement device (MAD). The mandibular advancement device forces the bottom jaw ahead and that maintains your air passages unblocked. All of these specifically created devices prohibit your lower teeth and jaw from falling backward causing the back of your tongue to obstruct a person’s airway and greatly reduce the airspace within the pharynx. Having the airway opened, there certainly is quite a bit less danger of soft tissues pushing up against the back wall of the airway, causing vibration and then generating heavy snoring. If the mandible is moved into a position slightly forward, the person’s tongue will be positioned to not block their air passage.Mouthpieces for sleep apnea are only successful in cases where the teeth are in the appliance throughout being asleep. If for some resaon the mouth displays the inclination to become open during the nighttime, this complication really should be dealt with since this can cause your lower teeth to drop out from your device. Within this scenario, the apnea mouth piece would probably basically be successful in combination using a chin strap created for this very purpose. What should be looked into is people that take in air by means of his or her mouth area while they are sleeping typically do so due to a deficiency of o2 intake through the nose. This factor should certainly be dealt with to begin with.Mouth guards for sleep apnea are frequently attained at a dentist and will variety from 00 to over four thousand dollars to get this kind of treatment which consists of an examination, diagnostic exams plus x-rays, a tailor-made appliance as well as follow-up assessment. The follow-up assessment could entail pulse oximeter testing to help assess your own oxygen amounts when asleep and sleep monitors that may determine not merely your own o2 amounts while you are sleeping but will also check exactly how much time you actually spend in The rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep and also how many apnea incidents happened during the course of sleeping.Medical insurance might just cover a part of this treatment so a lot of consumers search for cheaper options in regards to obtaining oral devices for apnea, turning their attention in to the online to find possible options.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing stops for a very brief moment during routine sleep due to a narrowing or blocking of the airway. People may sometimes be experiencing many hundreds of these apnea episodes, or interruptions in breathing, through a single given night. Most people identified as having this medical condition, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), have a significant problem with snoring. Snoring becomes a problem either for themselves or for a partner, spouse or another family member with whom they’re sleeping. There are many different popular treatments for obstructive sleep apnea patients to get the condition under control, including snoring and apnea episodes. Oral appliances, or OAs, open the upper airway typically by pulling up as the OSA patient inhales and exhales. This will make the airways less narrow, which minimizes snoring and, purportedly, apnea episodes as well. Another major treatment for OSA patients is with the usage of continuous positive airway pressure machines. CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines actually send forced air through the airways, keeping them open to prevent apnea and minimizing snoring. Obviously, there is much debate concerning the various treatments for obstructive sleep apnea and which yields the best results. In some instances, the patient may experience less apnea episodes (which is a good thing), but then experience more snoring or additional negative effects. Investigation by scientists and professionals in the medical community has been conducted, especially over the past decade, to compare the effectiveness of CPAP versus other treatments like oral appliances. CPAP Machines At Work Before diving into the myriad of research projects scientists have carried out with obstructive sleep apnea individuals and CPAP technology, you have to first understand how CPAP works to get sleep apnea along with other symptoms, like snoring, under control. Most of the time in sleep apnea patients, the physiological cause of snoring and apnea episodes is due to the relaxation of muscles that occurs. This relaxation causes tissues at the back of the throat and the uvula to collapse, which ultimately restricts the passage of air. In turn, this has an effect on your breathing during the night. Whenever a CPAP machine is prescribed for a sleep apnea patient, they’re given a large machine in addition to a CPAP mask. What occurs during the night time is that the patient wears the mask, that is attached to the machine. The CPAP machine forces air — via the CPAP mask — using positive pressure that gets delivered to the airway to avoid its obstruction and enhance breathing. In addition to improving breathing, the CPAP mask and machine also reduces snoring. Research on CPAP Effectiveness The research conducted on CPAP machines have largely centered on their effectiveness for reducing snoring, apnea episodes and other symptoms related to obstructive sleep apnea. When you consider the entire body of research, you may conclude the CPAP is perhaps the most effective treatment on the market for OSA patients. However, there are downsides as well. Researchers at the university in Tokyo released a study in a 2004 issue of Internal Medicine in which they investigated the patient’s quality of life, depressive symptoms and excessive daytime sleepiness both before and after receiving treatment with a CPAP machine. Before treatment with CPAP, scientists found that patients’ total well being was significantly linked to the ratings on their self-depression scales. Soon after treatment, however, self-depression scales reduced significantly as also did the excessive sleepiness scale scores. The researchers concluded that treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with CPAP improves patients’ quality of life by alleviating depression. Being treated with a CPAP machine at home also offers great benefits for ones relationship with a spouse or bed partner. Researchers at a university in Chicago, Illinois, published a 2007 study in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine where they examined the sleep of married couples, in both the laboratory and at home. The researchers measured both the husband’s and wives’ quality of life (QOL) using a unique self-report scale, and in addition they required the individuals to take a sleepiness scale. While the husband’s adjustment to being treated with CPAP was positive and also raised his QOL scores, the same was not true for the wives. Whether it was the noise from the machine or simply being conditioned to arousal, the wives’ QOL scores were less than the husband’s after being treated with CPAP. In other words, the husband adjusted better to receiving treatment with CPAP than the wives’ did. However, researchers conclude that a longer follow-up period is required in further research to determine if similar effects are seen.

Sleep apnea is caused by an obstruction in the nasal air passage. An individual who has sleep disorder often snores while sleeping, which normally is the fist sign to detect a person has sleep apnea. Snoring is caused by a breathing obstruction, which stops the air flow in the nose and mouth. Aside from being an annoying and noisy problem, sleep disorder can branch out to several other problems which can be disadvantageous to the person with apnea

People who suffer from either lesser or severe forms of this illness know that sleep apnea cures are critical. There are two basic forms of apnea: central and obstructive. Obstructive sleep apnea can be treated through surgery, as breathing is interrupted by a physical block to the air flow.

Sleep apnea is no longer an unknown quantity. This is a widespread medical problem in the country. According to statistics, 4 percent of Americans have this sleep disorder is a walking time bomb because a larger percentage of people do not know they have sleep apnea. The profile of sufferers are individuals in their sixties, and are obese, and more males than females have the condition too.

Treatment

Surgery is the most permanent treatment for many people with OSA. In advance cases of OSADifferent surgical procedures include removal of tonsils, and adenoids, tongue reduction, or a surgery in the trachea.

There are treatments available that correct blocked airways. For example, dentists provide oral appliances that adjust airways to provide better breathing passages during sleep. These appliances mainly come as lower jaw or mandibular repositioning devices. These appliances are preferred for mild to moderate sleep apnea.

you should remove all traces of cigarettes and alcohol in the house so that he can avoid the temptation to smoke and drink. These activities worsen the symptoms, thus, taking the edge off your treatment. Also, sedatives and sleeping pills must be hidden, if not completely eliminated, in the house.

A breathing device, also known as CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure is a common choice for people with moderate to severe adult apnea. It is basically a mask which covers the nose and mouth to supply the person with continuous air as he or she sleeps. People who use this find that their snoring is reduced while on CPAP, but returns when they are off the CPAP.

Getting plenty of sleep is another home treatment of sleep apnea. Sufferers of this sleep disorder experience more episodes if they are not getting enough sleep. Try sleeping on your side to eliminate mild symptoms. To prevent you from sleeping on your back try sewing a pocket on the back of your pajamas and place a tennis ball in it. That way you will not be able to sleep on your back.

For overweight people, the sleep apnea treatment that relies on behavioral therapy requires a weight loss of at least ten percent. Studies have revealed that a weight closer to the average value diminishes significantly the number of apneic episodes per hour. Moreover, for such cases people are encouraged to use anatomically designed pillows that enable them to assume a comfortable side posture during sleep.

If you suffer from sleep apnea, you should already be familiar with CPAP breathing machines and sleep apnea mouthpieces. The main problem with these devices is that people stop using them because of their inconvenience and discomfort. For this reason, you might be looking into surgery for sleep apnea.

Surgery for sleep apnea becomes necessary when the condition begins to create a negative impact on your quality of life. The impact may be relatively minor, such as a sore throat, or it can be more serious like as constant and severe fatigue that prevents the fulfillment of daily obligations.

Constant fatigue can subject you to unforeseen dangers, such as dozing off while driving or working with heavy machinery. A decreased level of alertness due to a lack of sleep is not something that you should be forced to live with.

If you have already tried less invasive methods such as airway positioning and CPAP devices without improvement, it may be time to consider surgery for sleep apnea.

There are many different types of surgical procedures that may be performed to help alleviate your condition. One of the most common procedures is called an Uvulopalatopharyngopsty, which consists of the removal of some of the soft tissue in your palate, including your uvula. Often, your tonsils will also be removed at the same time to help make your airway wider. A wider airway will help decrease some of the obstruction that promotes this sleep disorder.

Nasal surgery is another option that may help put an end to your sleep disorder. If you have narrow nasal passages or a deviated septum, you can have a surgical procedure done to decrease or eliminate these obstructions completely, which may help relieve your symptoms. You will be asleep during these surgical procedures and will not feel any pain during the surgery.

As with most health care procedures, there is no guarantee of permanent termination of sleep apnea after surgery. While there is a significant chance of immediate improvement, there are no guarantees. Your physician will give you a full examination and decide which type of surgery has the best chance to benefit you the most and what the chances of a successful surgical procedure are in your specific case.

Any medical procedure that requires sedation may carry serious risks. Although rare, serious complications may occur during or after surgery. Minor complications that may be observed following surgery include minor bleeding, throat or nasal irritation, infection, throat pain and swelling. These are temporary and will usually begin to diminish within the first 48 hours following surgery.

As always, you should consult your doctor for medical advice if you are considering surgery for sleep apnea.

About five minutes later Allan suddenly seemed to choke, wake up, turn around and go back to sleep. Weird! It was as if nothing had happened at all – he just went right back to sleep. The next morning when mentioned what I heard and saw, he seemed surprised. Are you kidding me? He asked. No, I said and told him to make an appointment with our doctor right away. “There must be a bone stuck in your throat” I said and added, “Can you feel it somewhere?” “Bone in my throat? No I don’t think so” he said and added, “Apart from feeling sleepy and tired I’m quite okay”.

Our family doctor heard me out patiently and asked me a few questions like does Allen snore, does he frequently complain of being sleepy during the day time, does he complain of being tired, or having headaches in the morning? I told the doctor that Allan does not snore but my answer to all other questions would have to be “yes”. The doctor peered and poked into Allen’s nose and throat and finally said he was referring him to a throat specialist. To make a long story short, a week and several tests later which included an overnight stay in a sleep center, Allan was diagnosed with Central sleep apnea. The doctor was kind enough to explain to us what Central sleep apnea was.

What is Central sleep apnea?

Central sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that happens when signals from the brain that instruct the body to breathe in and out somehow get lost in transit. The lack of instruction results in stoppage of breathing and the body gets starved of oxygen. When this happens, the brain goes into hyper drive and wakes up the person which results in the choking sounds, turn over, and go back to sleep. Essentially, the breathing cycle restarts and continues until the signals are lost again. The whole process goes on many times during the night. I was told that unless treated immediately, Central sleep apnea can lead to disastrous consequences.

I have been a sleep walker for a long time. I get up in the nite and mess around in the bathroom. Walk around the house and actually lately I have been pretty busy at nite. I sometimes wake up in the middle of my activites, and sometimes I wake up and realize I did something stupid.
One of the doctors I work with believes I may have sleep apnea because he says I “look” like someone with sleep apnea. He says he can see it in my neck area. I can see my adams apple and granted since I am 43, my cheeks have gotten fat, but I would not consider my neck overly fat.
He says sleep apnea is a major cause of sleep walking in adults and he believes I should go for a sleep study. I have never been able to sleep in strange places. I usually sleep about 7 or sometimes 6 hours a nite. I am a pretty uptight personality.
Do you know anything about this? I am a nurse, but never really have dealt with this condition and would like some information. Its really freaking me out.

ah but maz you aren’t really fully rested if you can’t sleep correctly one would think..and it could perhaps under certain stresses cause sleeping problems.

plus the night relieving of the bladder doesn’t sound to well rested.
well if you had read it can affect any one even if you aren’t overweight..

does sleep apnea cause light-headedness, dizzyness, and feeling unbalanced. i also have high blood pressure and stress out easily. in the past two nights i’ve been waking up shaking. the first night, 5 hrs after i went to sleep, it happend. last night two hrs. after i went to sleep, dad and sister woke me up when they got home, it happend. i also don’t sleep that well because in my dream i feel like i suffocate and then wake up. the past week i was stressed out because i was going away from my parents with my cousin to my aunt’s in Canada for a chek-up over there and today, day i was leaving, i didn’t leave because i got pain in the middle top of my chest, but it went away, turned out to be air and gas in my chest. what is the main thing you feel when you have brain cancer/ tumor depending anywhere it would be located? Seizures right. i don’t have them.i’m really feeling light headedness but it’s also is hot. oh and i also felt chest tightness and presure which didn’t let me breath deep. i also felt head pressure and dizzy, but when i forgot about it,or rested on the bed, it went away. is this all caused because of sleep apnea. i haven’t gone to the docter or sleep speacialist, but going on tuesday to doctor so might get a sleep study done to so don’t say go to doctor.

My dentist needed to do surgery, so I was put to sleep and the doctor told me that I had some breathing problems. What’s happening is I’ll stop breathing for a bit, then when my body realizes it, I’ll gasp for air by reflex. It happened five times during an hour long surgery and he said it may happen 50 times during a night. Happens when awake sometimes too. Also I snore like nobody’s business.
He says I should see a doctor about this. What kind of doctor should I see?

I know that I should see a doctor for an official diagnosis and that Yahoo! Answers is not a credible method of determining something like this, but I already have an appointment scheduled for next week and am concerned in the meantime, so this couldn’t hurt.

I have a heart murmur as well as some form of arrhythmia where my heart will skip beats throughout the day. I’ve had this condition since I was young, and after extensive tests by doctors over the years, have been told repeatedly that the murmur is benign and nothing to worry about. However, over the past few months, I have been occasionally waking up gasping for air, coughing, and choking on my saliva as though I’ve just inhaled saliva into my lungs. In addition to this, occurring about just as frequently but on separate nights, I will wake up after having dreamt that I have had an extremely bad case of my heart skipping beats. Since these are just dreams, I normally would not be concerned, but the nature of these dreams reminds me of a specific kind where a previous dream is interrupted by a new dream about something occurring in or near my room.

For example, if I really have to urinate and am in REM sleep, my dream will be interrupted by another dream about me waking up and running to the bathroom to urinate, even though I am still dreaming. These “heart skipping a beat” dreams are very similar to this, especially since I always dream that I’m still in my bed and have just woken up as this is happening. There is often a sense of impending death, and the beat skipping is far faster, heavier, or “harder” than it usually is during the day.

For instance, the last time I slept, I had a dream about waking up in my bed to find that my heart had almost stopped completely, with occasional rapid, “hard” beats. I then REALLY woke up to find myself lying on the left side of my chest where my heart is. Usually, however, the dream involves an incredibly fast heart rate (I’m guessing 250+ bpm) along with skipped beats, a sense of being about to die, and then I wake up on my back as opposed to on my side. I also wake up on my back on the nights where I’m gasping for air and coughing.

As I understand it, sleep apnea may cause the gasping for air in the middle of the night. Doing some of my own research, I’ve also found that otherwise benign arrhythmias can cause sudden death during REM sleep for people who have sleep apnea. As both the gasping for air phenomenon and my arrhythmia dreams seem to be increasing in frequency, how likely is it that I could die in my sleep soon from cardiac arrest?

Thanks!
