Health : Sleep Center Part II (Sleep Apnea)

My second visit to the sleep center for additional diagnostics and a trial run with a CPAP mask, to hopefully stop me from ‘dying while I am dreaming.’

AOA Health Dose: Sleep Apnea

Joe Giaimo, DO, an osteopathic physician specializing in pulmonary and sleep medicine, discusses the signs of sleep apnea, what happens when sleep apnea occurs and how you may be able to prevent it.

what is causing this onset of health issues?

why do 1 in 3 people have acid refulx?what is causing restless legs syndrom?sleep apnea?asthma?extreme childhood obesity?extreme anxiety disorders?

don’t we need to know what is CAUSING all of these problems?not just research treatments or cures. years ago you never heard of these things, all these ailments that plague us … in the old days, not everyone suffered from heartburn etc – is it the genetically altered foods we consume? what is going on,i would like your opinion on this and any ideas you may have on the subject ……

I was just diagnosed and afraid to take the drug they recommended due to it influencing dopamine levels and potential for hallucinations and severe obsessions with gambling, sex, overeating, and shopping. there are lawsuits against the company for these life wrecking side effects.

I have been sleep deprived nearly 25 years and on bipap/cpap for 15 with little abatement of the many health effects. I am finanlly starting to get some of the errors made in treating sleep apnea corrected but it will be in vain if I can’t get the PLMD under control. I think they said I did it 175 times in less than 6 hours and weach time disrupts your sleep.

I have sleep apnea and am scheduled to pick up a cpap machine this week. I found them to be uncomfortable when I spent the night at the sleep clinic but I’m going to give it a try. My sleep apnea is moderate to severe so I’ve got to try something to improve my condition. I’ve heard several people say they hadn’t slept so well in years after going on the cpap. Can anyone out there give me a review? If they are bothersome at first can you eventually get used to them?

Sleep apnea is not a disorder to be taken lightly and is a condition that is not going to go away by itself in time. Sleep apnea is in fact classed as a “progressive disease” which means that just like heart disease, cancer and diabetes it worsens with time. There is considerable dispute in the medical community over the effect that sleep apnea has on other medical conditions. This said, there is a definite link between sleep apnea and a variety of physical conditions including hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, heart attack, pulmonary hypertension, stroke and kidney failure.

Researchers are looking more and more into why these conditions are linked to problems that erupt the upper airways of a person with sleep apnea. It is well known of course that being overweight, smoking and abusing alcohol contribute to sleep apnea and in turn lead to a higher probability of developing heart disease and high blood pressure. It is not clear however why some people without these elements in their lifestyle still have sleep apnea.

Efforts to discover what causes sleep apnea have been intense, and although the actual cause may not have been identified, researchers have discovered that sleep apnea (sleep apnoea) health problems can be serious.

There are several major risk factors for heart disease such as obesity, alcohol abuse, and smoking, but you might be surprised to find out that sleep apnea is also a major risk factor. Combine any of these factors, and the risk doubles for serious sleep apnoea health problems. For example, if you are obese and you suffer from sleep apnea, then your risk of heart problems increases.
