If you suffer from sleep apnea, you should already be familiar with CPAP breathing machines and sleep apnea mouthpieces. The main problem with these devices is that people stop using them because of their inconvenience and discomfort. For this reason, you might be looking into surgery for sleep apnea.

Surgery for sleep apnea becomes necessary when the condition begins to create a negative impact on your quality of life. The impact may be relatively minor, such as a sore throat, or it can be more serious like as constant and severe fatigue that prevents the fulfillment of daily obligations.

Constant fatigue can subject you to unforeseen dangers, such as dozing off while driving or working with heavy machinery. A decreased level of alertness due to a lack of sleep is not something that you should be forced to live with.

If you have already tried less invasive methods such as airway positioning and CPAP devices without improvement, it may be time to consider surgery for sleep apnea.

There are many different types of surgical procedures that may be performed to help alleviate your condition. One of the most common procedures is called an Uvulopalatopharyngopsty, which consists of the removal of some of the soft tissue in your palate, including your uvula. Often, your tonsils will also be removed at the same time to help make your airway wider. A wider airway will help decrease some of the obstruction that promotes this sleep disorder.

Nasal surgery is another option that may help put an end to your sleep disorder. If you have narrow nasal passages or a deviated septum, you can have a surgical procedure done to decrease or eliminate these obstructions completely, which may help relieve your symptoms. You will be asleep during these surgical procedures and will not feel any pain during the surgery.

As with most health care procedures, there is no guarantee of permanent termination of sleep apnea after surgery. While there is a significant chance of immediate improvement, there are no guarantees. Your physician will give you a full examination and decide which type of surgery has the best chance to benefit you the most and what the chances of a successful surgical procedure are in your specific case.

Any medical procedure that requires sedation may carry serious risks. Although rare, serious complications may occur during or after surgery. Minor complications that may be observed following surgery include minor bleeding, throat or nasal irritation, infection, throat pain and swelling. These are temporary and will usually begin to diminish within the first 48 hours following surgery.

As always, you should consult your doctor for medical advice if you are considering surgery for sleep apnea.

It is always a bit of a shock when someone finds out that they have sleep apnea, or some form of sleep-disordered breathing. They have probably been told throughout their entire life that they snore a lot, or make loud snorting noises when they are asleep, but finding out that they have a disorder can be frightening.

Many doctors, upon diagnosing sleep apnea, will recommend a type of sleep apnea device for their patients. This device is a mask that straps onto the head and covers the nose and mouth. It essentially forces air into the body to prevent the disordered breathing.

But, a sleep apnea device doesn’t always work, and it is not without its own set of side effects. Many people who use this find that they have to sit up when they sleep, to prevent the mask from getting tangled around them or sliding off during sleep. The air that is brought through the mask is also prone to making a person’s sinus passages dry and congested.

A sleep apnea device may not be the best treatment for you, and it is good to know that there are many other ways to deal with this type of diagnosis. For many people, simple changes in lifestyle can make all the difference. One of the biggest predictors of disordered breathing is alcohol use. If you drink more than just a few drinks at night, this can be contributing to the problems you are having while you are sleeping.

In addition, just by adjusting the way in which you sleep, you might be able to get an easier and more steady air flow into your lungs. By sleeping on your side, instead of on your back, you will get more air and be less likely to stop breathing – and this will reduce your snoring as well.

About five minutes later Allan suddenly seemed to choke, wake up, turn around and go back to sleep. Weird! It was as if nothing had happened at all – he just went right back to sleep. The next morning when mentioned what I heard and saw, he seemed surprised. Are you kidding me? He asked. No, I said and told him to make an appointment with our doctor right away. “There must be a bone stuck in your throat” I said and added, “Can you feel it somewhere?” “Bone in my throat? No I don’t think so” he said and added, “Apart from feeling sleepy and tired I’m quite okay”.

Our family doctor heard me out patiently and asked me a few questions like does Allen snore, does he frequently complain of being sleepy during the day time, does he complain of being tired, or having headaches in the morning? I told the doctor that Allan does not snore but my answer to all other questions would have to be “yes”. The doctor peered and poked into Allen’s nose and throat and finally said he was referring him to a throat specialist. To make a long story short, a week and several tests later which included an overnight stay in a sleep center, Allan was diagnosed with Central sleep apnea. The doctor was kind enough to explain to us what Central sleep apnea was.

What is Central sleep apnea?

Central sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that happens when signals from the brain that instruct the body to breathe in and out somehow get lost in transit. The lack of instruction results in stoppage of breathing and the body gets starved of oxygen. When this happens, the brain goes into hyper drive and wakes up the person which results in the choking sounds, turn over, and go back to sleep. Essentially, the breathing cycle restarts and continues until the signals are lost again. The whole process goes on many times during the night. I was told that unless treated immediately, Central sleep apnea can lead to disastrous consequences.

Recently I’ve noticed that I seem to be always tired, which makes it very hard to focus. I discovered this because I need to stay focused at my new job. I get up at the same time everyday, around 8 am, and no matter what kind of sleep I get I seem to feel tired more often then not. It’s not every single day I feel this way, just a majority of them. Always feeling tired like this affects my mind as it makes it cloudy and I have problems focusing and remembering simple things even short term things. Recently I’ve been sweating a lot while sleeping as well even though I always have the air conditioning on. I don’t seem to snore though which makes me feel as though it isn’t sleep apnea. Feeling this way also makes me very irritable during the day, which I always blamed on feeling tired. Another detail to note is that I’m not obese. I do get between 7-8 hours of sleep everynight and sometimes more on the weekends. What leads me to think it could be depression is that too much sleep can be one of the symptoms which on weekends if I dont force myself to get up I will remain in bed sleeping and feeling tired. Sometimes I do feel depressed it mainly happens at night when Im alone. I try to push these feelings aside and distract myself with tv or a game. These symptoms are found in both depression and sleep apnea. I want to be able to think clearly and not feel tired all the time. What could it be? Is it possible its all in my head?

My girlfriend has watched me sleep, and is pretty certain I have sleep apnea. I am not insured, and a sleep study costs greater than the costs of getting a CPAP machine. So I’m thinking I might as well just order the CPAP machine, that will be necessary if the tests confirm that I have sleep apnea. What are the potential negative consequences of me just ordering a CPAP machine over the internet and treating myself?
I realize the standard is to do it through a doctor. But it’s a lot of money. And I want to see if there are any dangerous consequences to me just ordering the machine on ebay, and administering it to myself.

My boyfriend has precognitive dreams almost every night. Sometimes he’ll dream of someone suffocating or being shot/stabbed.
The other night he woke me up by thrashing and gasping for air. His eyes were were rolled back and he was choking. I tried waking him up but it didn’t work; after that he got weak and started passing out, so I panicked and gave him mouth to mouth (yes I know its extremely stupid and dangerous to give mouth to mouth to someone who’s heart is beating or something, but i freaked!). It worked. I got air flowing again and he woke up gasping and scared….he said I saved his life.

Im afraid of how serious this is. What if next time no one is there to help, or i just don’t wake up? (he’s had a full out seizure once because of a serious precognition so it’s not like im just paranoid)
What do I do? What can be done to help him? is there any way to wake someone up from a precognitive dream?

When I was first diagnosed with sleep apnea in the summer of 2005 I eighed 280lbs and smoked 1 1/2 packs of cigarretts a day. I had 117 episodes per hour. I was given a CPAP machine set at a pressure level of 10. Since then I have quit somking, over a year know, and now weigh 225lbs on my way to 200lbs. I am still using the CPAP though set at the same pressure. The problem is I am starting to feel tired again during the day. Not to the level it was before I started therapy, but I can feel a difference. I made an appointment with my doctor but the earliest she can see me is July. I was wondering if anyone knew if I am actually causing sleep apnea or something similar by using the machine?

Do you think my surgery will hurt too much if I am awake?
By the looks of the answers I’ve gotten so far it may not be as bad as what I had imagined. The dental surgeon is gonna give me a consultation before I go in so I am still not fully certain if he’ll end up pulling two or three teeth. What I was told to expect is a root canal and that he will have to cut down into the back portion of my gums to get a very odd yet incomplete tooth that was broken some time ago from out of the upper back area of my mouth. All I can say to what I just typed spelling out my own dental situation is WOW.. as I have also half way pre-imagined some pain or stress to the situation before going in.
Thanks for the answers everyone.

My sinuses sort of swell up, or stuff up during sleep, causing apnea and mouth breathing. I can’t remember when the last decent night sleep took place. It’s killing me, literally. I’ve heard of flonaise, etc, but what works best for opening the sinuses up? Should I try claritin? what are the long term side affects of flonaise? Usually, depending on what side I’m on, one sinus completely closes off, the other only partially opened. I do use nasal strips and they help, just not enough. Any tips, remedies, or medications that have worked for you, would be greatly appreciated.

I have sleep apnea and I am scheduled to have it done on March 27th. I am having done Genioglossal Advance, Hyoid Advance, Septoplasty and Bilateral Inferior Turbinectomy. I am really scared about the recovery and the pain afterwards. As of right now, I am always fatigued due to the apnea and also have really bad headaches almost every other day. I always have jaw pain and I cannot breath out of the left side of my nose. I really want to get better, but I am terrified at this point. Please help me. I am 24 years old.
I need to have this done because not being able to breath is causing other problems in my life like extreme fatigue, headaches, lack of energy etc. I really do not want to be attached to a breathing machine for the rest of my life. I am only 24 years old.

That’s not too bad (yet), but it’s not easy to function some days when I’m tired from lack of QUALITY sleep. Of course, my insurance, doesn’t cover medical equipment (great, huh? – they’ll diagnose ya, but they won’t help cure ya!!).Does anyone have any info on who I can contact for free / used / deep discounted CPAP equipment? I know I need to get a new mask, and hoses. I’ve tried hospitals, and American Red Cross, with no luck.
