I am interested in gastric bypass surgery however I do not have health insurance and most of the insurance plans i’ve looked into say they do not cover pre existing medical conditions. what steps can I take to make this surgery possible? Are there any health plans that might cover this? Please help!

I am stop lossed and undergoing a medical board for back pain. During the process i was also diagnosed with sleep apnea. The army pulmonolgist told me today that its recommended that i use a CPAP machine to sleep at night. He told me that it would make my MEB take longer if i accept the treatment by using the CPAP. And in turn could stay in becuase the cpap fixed my problem. What do i DO???Deny treatment so that my problem does not get better and get out. Or take the treatment and risk having to stay in….why do i have to choose between my health or getting out???

My son is 15 and super intent on going military. We have been looking at academies and senior military colleges. My big concern is this: he was diagnosed with sleep apnea at a very young age. I have seen nowhere that this in itself is disqualifying. Is it? In addition, he is very interested in getting mandibular advancement surgery to help cure the apnea so he won’t have to deal with it in the military. My concern is that the surgery itself could be disqualifying. Any answers out there? If he can’t go military, I don’t know what he’ll do with himself! It’s all he wants!
Thanks, Justin. My understanding is that there is a big difference between diagnoses before you enter the service, and those diagnoses that occur once you’re in service. Also, our experience is that the local recruiters tell you what they think you want to hear. Any more info out there?
Thank you, “Boats”. This is the clearest answer we’ve received, though a little discouraging. If I may ask: does that apply to all branches? Also, what is your background in this area? Thanks again!

does sleep apnea cause light-headedness, dizzyness, and feeling unbalanced. i also have high blood pressure and stress out easily. in the past two nights i’ve been waking up shaking. the first night, 5 hrs after i went to sleep, it happend. last night two hrs. after i went to sleep, dad and sister woke me up when they got home, it happend. i also don’t sleep that well because in my dream i feel like i suffocate and then wake up. the past week i was stressed out because i was going away from my parents with my cousin to my aunt’s in Canada for a chek-up over there and today, day i was leaving, i didn’t leave because i got pain in the middle top of my chest, but it went away, turned out to be air and gas in my chest. what is the main thing you feel when you have brain cancer/ tumor depending anywhere it would be located? Seizures right. i don’t have them.i’m really feeling light headedness but it’s also is hot. oh and i also felt chest tightness and presure which didn’t let me breath deep. i also felt head pressure and dizzy, but when i forgot about it,or rested on the bed, it went away. is this all caused because of sleep apnea. i haven’t gone to the docter or sleep speacialist, but going on tuesday to doctor so might get a sleep study done to so don’t say go to doctor.

Okay, so last year I miscarried at 6 weeks – but I didn’t even find out I was pregnant for sure until I was in the middle of misscarrying (took tests religiously everday for weeks, never registered positive until 1 day into the miscarriage) – if you read back on my questions about a year ago, I had about 10 x-rays to my stomach around implantation, and 3 weeks later began to bleed heavily. I blamed the x-rays all this past year, up until the other day when I got to thinking about SLEEP APNEA and pregnancy…..there is a chance I am pregnant right now, but this had NEVER crossed my mind until recently. It would make sense right?? A woman quits breathing 59 times an hour while she’s sleeping – that’s a part of EVERY minute, every hour….so it’s cutting off oxygen to the placenta…..anyone ever stopped and thought about this before??….Now I’m almost 100 percent sure it caused my miscarriage last year, and am terrified this time around. If I am pregnant I would be 4 1/2 – 5 weeks and I don’t go back for my cpap (breathing maching) fitting until this friday, and then it will take another 10 days after that before I can get my machine from the Medical Supply store…that’s IF sleep apnea caused the miscarriage a year ago….what do you think?

I am not 100% sure if I have sleep apnea or not. If I do, it is most likely obstructive sleep apnea. In the past two years, I have woken up in the middle of the night gasping for air. This has happened two times. I do not snore or drink, and I am not overweight. For the past few months, I have been having daytime fatigue every single day, even though I am getting enough sleep. I heard that sleeping on your back just makes it worse because the muscles in the back of the throat collapse, making it harder to breathe. Before I started getting sleepy during the daytime, I always slept on my side and never was tired when I was awake. But ever since I started sleeping on my back, I have been tired every day. Does this mean I have sleep apnea? Also, I have been trying to get back into the habit of sleeping on my side, but I can never fall asleep. I have tried this dozens of times. Is there anything I can do?

… called a Thornton Adjustable Positioner, which is a brand name for a mandibular advancement appliance you wear like a mouth guard. My dentist had to take molds of my upper and lower teeth, then sent the molds to the company, who made the appliance to fit over my teeth at night. The two pieces hook together, and you can adjust it to pull your lower jaw forward when you sleep, which opens your airway and alleviates sleep apnea.

Anyway – turns out that the device, over the years, has pushed my front lower teeth forward almost a half an inch, so now I have a severe underbite. It has totally changed the bite pattern in my mouth so that now my back teeth don’t even touch or come together at all.

I went to an orthodontist who said that the appliance has caused this problem, and it’s going to take 6,000 dollars worth of orthodontia (braces) and 18 months to solve it.

There was no warning about this problem from the TAP maker. Should I get a lawyer and try to sue them for the
cost of the braces? My orthodontist said he would have NEVER offered these appliances, because even when they first came out, he foresaw that these kinds of problems were going to occur. Wish I had known him back then, but…

Has there ever been any medical studies on whether or not liposuction of the face and neck areas can improve sleep apnea symptoms? I keep hearing that airway obstruction can often be caused by excessive tissue around the airways, and is common in overweight people.

So – what if someone had most of the excess fat removed from their neck and face through liposuction? Would that take some of the pressure off the airway and allow it to open up a little bit? Or is this just a pipe dream? (pardon the pun)

Hi, I have taken paxil since 2005 when I had a serious depressive episode. During that episode, I did not sleep for a good 2 months. I also think during that bad episode, I developed sleep apnea. I was 140 lbs during that time. I remember telling my husband that I could not sleep because I would wake up gasping for air. Now, after being on paxil for 3 years, I am ok, overweight, (210), I do snore according to family and spouse, and if I forget 1 dose, the next night, I wake up gasping for air. When I do take the paxil, I no longer forget to breathe. Do you think it could be the weight that has made me snore or have the apnea? Or could it be the paxil that has made me have sleep apnea? When I take the paxil, I do not dream, I usually sleep well and get rested for the most part. When I miss one dose, I seem to remember my dreams, I feel so tired. I am thinking of doing a drastic weight loss so I could stop the snoring. Like go from 210 t0 130. I wonder if it would cure the snoring?

What was your recovery time? We’re there certain things you couldn’t do during your recovery time such as not being able to eat certain foods for example. Anything you can tell me would be most helpful. Thank you in advance for your time.

I am looking to buy a pulse oxyimeter with alarm that would wake me when my oxygen gets too low, like below 80. Do you think this would work? Where is a good place to buy one?
Thanks.
