The doctor warned that not taking immediate remedial action for mild sleep apnea could make the situation worse and in the long term, prove fatal. I think I’ve been having mild sleep deprivation for as long as I can remember so I decided that another week or two won’t make matters any worse. A good night’s sleep would have to wait until I did some research of my own. To begin with, I decided to talk to a few friends about it as well as research the net for possible natural solutions. I’m really glad I did.

Different types of sleep apnea

Through my research I found out that there were three versions of sleep apnea. These are: (a) Central sleep apnea, (b) Obstructive apnea and (c) Mixed Apnea.
I guess you know that our brain controls everything, even our breathing. In central sleep deprivation, the signals from our brain are lost in transit resulting in our breathing system kind of misfiring i.e. it might briefly skip inhaling or exhaling.

Obstructive Sleep deprivation occurs when your breathing is physically blocked i.e. your wind pipe won’t allow air to pass through. This can happen if you have a severe cold and suffer from acute swelling of the tonsils, or are obese.

The third kind i.e. Mixed Sleep Apnea is when you suffer from Central sleep deprivation and have a wind pipe that is frequently physically blocked.

Natural treatments

If you suffer from a mild sleep apnea, some natural remedies might help. This might sound ridiculous to you but I found that drinking a nice warm glass of milk with a pinch of turmeric powder (available at any grocery store), before sleeping gave me sound, natural, restful sleep. So long as you add just a pinch of turmeric powder you won’t need any sugar in it.

If you happen to be lactose intolerant, you might want to try a warm glass of herbal tea. Both these remedies will provide temporary cure for any throat infection and go a long way towards giving you some much need sleep.

If neither of these remedies sound appealing to you, add a pinch of salt to a cup of warm water (as hot as you can take it) and gargle with it. You will get instant relief from any throat infection which in turn will reduce the effects of mild apnea.

I know this might be difficult, but try and sleep on your side rather than on your back. If you are a smoker, either give it up or at least dramatically cut down on the number of smokes you have during the second half of the day. Lastly, if you feel the air in your room is too dry, try using an air humidifier. All these or a combination of them will help you combat mild sleep apnea.

My doctor, who’s new because I moved, referred me to a “sleep specialist” because I told him I snored heavily, am often tired during the day, and am overweight. The sleep specialist, after having me sleep with a bunch of wires strapped to me for a night, diagnosed me with “obstructive sleep apnea“, and is telling me I need a breathing machine for when I sleep at night as treatment. Also, he’s told me all sorts of stuff about health risks from the apnea: I’ll get to being fatigued to the point of narcolepsy, I’m at even more risk for an early heart attack, even though I’ve started going to the gym I won’t be able to lose weight, etc.

Now, what I want to know is, are there really health risks from sleep apnea, and is it a real problem, or is it just some sort of medical fad or scam?

I’ve recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea by a sleep clinic, and they’ve recommended that I start CPAP treatment. I’m extremely uncomfortable with this diagnosis because I didn’t GO to the sleep clinic for apnea–I was having trouble with snoring. In fact, in all our years of marriage, my wife says she has NEVER heard me stop breathing. I understand that it is just about impossible to snore while using a CPAP, but it also seems like a fairly serious solution for a relatively minor problem. In other words, I recognize that this treatment will WORK for me, but it seems like the cure is worse than the disease.

I’m getting the impression that these sleep pulmonologists might not be exactly the brightest kids right out of medical school. Does anyone know if this is a real treatment for snoring?
