Best answer:

Answer by Bradley Whitehead
I think it COULD help in theory, i mean it’s a forced air system right? You’d probably be best off treating the source of the apnea, because in your specific case sleep apnea (and snoring) seem to just be a symptom of your allergies and congestion. Talk to your doctor about a nighttime decongestant for long term use.

You probably don’t want to use the over the counter nighttime decongestants for a very extended period of time because they’re made with ephedrine or pseudophedrine, which isn’t good to take every day for a long time.

Article by Art Jones

When one shares a room with a snorer, it can be very difficult to get a good night’s sleep. When the snoring comes from sleep apnea, it can be even worse. The roommate may struggle for breath all night long, snoring loudly, gasping and holding their breath. The first and foremost tip that one can act upon is to try to urge the snoring roommate to look into the possibilities of relief offered by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines.

CPAP machines are respiratory ventilators that were invented for the purpose of treating sleep apnea. They work by gently applying positive airway pressure inside the snorer’s nostrils to make it easier for him or her to breathe. Not only are CPAP machines literally life-savers for the people who wear them, they also aid in helping sleepless roommates get a good night’s rest.

If CPAPs are out of the question, roommates of snorers might want to try ear plugs. The soft disposable kind that are most commonly worn by swimmers are quite effective. Before inserting, they should be squeezed together, then inserted gently at the opening of the ear canal and released. They work by expanding to fill the ear canal opening and blocking out the noise. CPAP machines are a reliable way to prevent snoring.

The disadvantages of wearing this type of ear plug are that they can be expensive, they are not necessarily environmental-friendly, and they can become dislodged from the ear canal, interrupt sleep and require refitting.

A white noise machine is also a way to take one’s mind off of a roommate’s snoring. These devices emit sounds, typically from nature, that are also rhythmic. The theory behind their use is that they emit a constant background noise that one’s brain quickly becomes accustomed to. After this occurs, the mind tends to block out the sound so the user can sleep without noticing it. The constant, soft background noise is said to block or cover other noises.

Another trick to try when one’s roommate snores is to use an .mp3 device and headphones or earplugs to stream in soft, soothing music. There are many different types of sleep music or meditation music available. However, the disadvantage of using this method to block out one’s roommate’s snoring is that wearing headphones or electronic ear plugs to bed can be very uncomfortable after awhile. There is always the risk that they will fall out if the user turns over, or that the plug will come out of the device itself.

I need some tips on living with someone with sleep apnea. My father was diagnosed while he was in prison with sleep apnea and was on a cpap machine. When he was released he was not on a cpap machine and has snored horribly, keeping me up all night. I’ve tried to talk him into doing a sleep study so he can get a cpap machine but he has told me numerous times that he wants to wait until he loses weight and gets his diabetes under control. His diabetes is under control, but he is still convinced that he will stop snoring once he loses weight. He doesn’t realize that he snored just as bad as he is now when he was a healthy weight.

My room is right next to his, the walls are paper thin, I am losing so much sleep I don’t know what to do anymore. Can anyone with this kind of experience give me some tips on how to get used to it?

I am very curious about this, since CPAPs save lives all over the world. I think we all need more education on CPAP machines, and we need to spread the word that if people snore or stop breathing at night, they should have a sleep study done.

Sleep Apnea causes high blood pressure, can cause strokes and heart attacks. It sometimes makes people have heartburn at night, and makes them sleepy during the day. People can become forgetful or irritated. This is just a short list of all the damage that having untreated sleep apnea can cause.

I asked the doctor what they do IF sleep apnea is found and he said the person wears some kind of a device on their face, which upset my husband even greater than he all ready was.
I’m really confused as to why the Dr would want to put a patient through a sleep study, when the snoring doesn’t bother him or me, he doesn’t stop breathing in his sleep, and neither one of us is complaining about it.

I have sleep apnea and am scheduled to pick up a cpap machine this week. I found them to be uncomfortable when I spent the night at the sleep clinic but I’m going to give it a try. My sleep apnea is moderate to severe so I’ve got to try something to improve my condition. I’ve heard several people say they hadn’t slept so well in years after going on the cpap. Can anyone out there give me a review? If they are bothersome at first can you eventually get used to them?

I have tried using a CPAP machine and I found out I was allergic to the material in the mask and also the nose tubes. So I had to give up using the machine. Are there any other remedies such as like using a cool mist humidifier to help resolve the blockage in the air way.
