What is OSA?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) describes a medical condition that is characterized by intermittent episodes of absence of breathing (apnea) caused by complete obstruction of the upper airway passages during sleep. Narrowing of the air passages at the back of the throat occur in certain group of individuals. Complete closure of these passages can occur during sleep as a result of further relaxation of the tissue at the back of the throat.

During these episodes of apnea, which last from 10-90 seconds, reduction of oxygen level in the body develops until the apnea is terminated by an arousal, which restores the airway patency. This cycle of events is repeated multiple times during sleep in individuals with OSA, resulting in fragmented sleep.

Im getting a surgery done, and before hand, my surgeon wants to know that I dont have sleep apnea, (stopping breathing during sleep/surgery) so they sent me to a sleep lab. I went in at 8PM…they wired me up…..I watched TV…..it didnt really wind me down that much…so I began to read…(which normally knocks me right out)….and when Im at HOME..right after reading i’ll turn the light off…then do a SELF Quickie….and go to sleep…well at the study…I was thinking to myself….Goodness come on now…there are plenty of nights that I dont masturbate…i’ll be fine tonight…but then 11PM hit…and then it began pushing 12Midnight… I had paid over $1,000 for this study, I HAD to go to sleep, b/c I dont want to return and repay…so I did the ONLY thing I could that would put me to sleep….I did it mostly without any movement (I am good at this hehe) I am just curious because I was having an EKG, through testing, would they be able to know I was up to ‘no good”????? The sleep tech was a woman my age, mid 20′s…and cool as heck, so really I dont care…im just wondering if they could tell through reading my body and mind was up to something….???

(b/c the sleep tech passes the test results on to a few other people … docs/etc) Thanks !!

I recently took a sleep study?

I went and had asleep study had and I just found out that my, results came back that I have mild symptoms of sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. What would be the out come? I was told that It was not sever enough to need a cpap machine so what would the do?
When I called to speak to the Doctors, they told me the results and said that they could not fit me in until September.

Has anyone ever found out that they had sleep apnea through taking the sleep study? Is a Cpap always the recommended treatment? What other treatments are there? Has anyone found out what their sleeping problem was and felt 100x times better? Has it changed anyone’s life for the better? I have one coming up next Friday. I have been tired for as long as I can remember. I should have done this a long time ago. It has come in between everything in my life…friends, family, work, etc. I hope I can find some answers and start living a normal life and not feel tired every single day of my life!

My girlfriend has watched me sleep, and is pretty certain I have sleep apnea. I am not insured, and a sleep study costs greater than the costs of getting a CPAP machine. So I’m thinking I might as well just order the CPAP machine, that will be necessary if the tests confirm that I have sleep apnea. What are the potential negative consequences of me just ordering a CPAP machine over the internet and treating myself?
I realize the standard is to do it through a doctor. But it’s a lot of money. And I want to see if there are any dangerous consequences to me just ordering the machine on ebay, and administering it to myself.

Just thought I’d share the good new. But I didn’t find out what they do for disturbed sleep apnea. They say my oxygen level went down to 80 and they put me on oxygen. Then they say I had leg kicks, snoring and coughing. I guess this is why they call it disturbed sleep apnea. Does any one know what kind of treatments they use to treat this disorder. Thank you for your answers. Hugs! Von

does that mean i have central sa. what can i do for it. cpap is not helping

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition in which a patient’s breathing passage seals during sleep, causing the patient to stop breathing. The muscles of the breathing passage relax during rest and close in persons with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Apnea is Greek for “without breath.” The body responds to this lack of oxygen by arousing, or waking from sleep. This cycle leads to the patient being unable to get the needed quantity of restful sleep and results in:
