Article by Paul Elms

Sleep apnea sufferers have to deal with the frightening thought of stopping breathing on a nightly basis. And it just doesn’t happen once a night; it can happen dozens even hundreds of times. There are a number of different devices on the market that claim to help this condition by providing a stream of air to the patient under pressure. They are called CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) devices, but they are commonly referred to as sleep apnea machines.

CPAP machines are quite expensive, costing up to ,000 or more, but they have a good success rate when used properly. Studies have shown that they can be up to 95% successful when used correctly. But there lies the central issue. Many people either don’t use them properly or give up using them after only one night.

You shouldn’t go out and just buy your own machine and start using it. Your doctor can guide you in making sure you have a proper diagnosis and suggest where to obtain the device. You maybe recommended to spend a night at a sleep laboratory, where there are experienced people on hand to make sure that you have the device set up correctly and fitted properly.

Some people find that the sleep apnea machine is uncomfortable to use at first. This may just be a case of getting used to it. Try it a few hours a night at first and then build up the length of time that you use it. If you find that it is difficult to breathe out, then you may find that a bilevel device would suit you. These newer devices have two different air pressures; with the pressure being lower when you exhale, thus making it easier to breathe.

If you tried using CPAP machines some years ago, you maybe pleasantly surprised at the advances that have been made. The newer models are now quieter, and smaller than ever. Although they will not suit everyone, these sleep apnea machines provide a non-invasive treatment that can significantly enhance people’s quality of life.

I went in at 8PM…they wired me up…..I watched TV…..it didnt really wind me down that much…so I began to read…(which normally knocks me right out)….and when Im at HOME..right after reading i’ll turn the light off…then do a SELF Quickie….and go to sleep…well at the study…I was thinking to myself….Goodness come on now…there are plenty of nights that I dont masturbate…i’ll be fine tonight…but then 11PM hit…and then it began pushing 12Midnight… I had paid over $1,000 for this study, I HAD to go to sleep, b/c I dont want to return and repay…so I did the ONLY thing I could that would put me to sleep….I did it mostly without any movement (I am good at this hehe) I am just curious because I was having an EKG, through testing, would they be able to know I was up to ‘no good”????? The sleep tech was a woman my age, mid 20′s…and cool as heck, so really I dont care…im just wondering if they could tell through reading my body and mind was up to something….???

(b/c the sleep tech passes the test results on to a few other people … docs/etc) Thanks !!

Any thoughts? Doctor suggested sleeping pills but that obviously didn’t work even during the sleep test. It’s gotten worse – I think I’m sleeping through the night but wake up exhausted.

How many of you use, or know someone who uses a CPAP machine at night to help them breathe and not to snore?

I am very curious about this, since CPAPs save lives all over the world. I think we all need more education on CPAP machines, and we need to spread the word that if people snore or stop breathing at night, they should have a sleep study done.

Sleep Apnea causes high blood pressure, can cause strokes and heart attacks. It sometimes makes people have heartburn at night, and makes them sleepy during the day. People can become forgetful or irritated. This is just a short list of all the damage that having untreated sleep apnea can cause.

I have been on one many years but he ordered setting 16 and the machine only went to 15..just got a new machine that goes to 20..company suggested I try 17 (as I was apparently still snoring even with cpap on) and go up in increments of 20 to see if it helps.

I have all the symptoms of sleep apnea (depression, memory loss, lack of concentration, no energy, always tired) except for morning headaches despite using cpap (at the setting 15).

I am wondering what effects will I immediately notice or notice with time if it is helping. He said his brother lost 60 pounds, is this because of more energy??

Please answer if you have any answers as I am most anxious to know if I am better after about 15 years on cpap with little benefit. I just used lst night for the 1st time, but don’t feel that different (although I did dream).

thanks
that last sentence should read anxious tio know if I will get better not if I am better

Do you think my surgery will hurt too much if I am awake?
By the looks of the answers I’ve gotten so far it may not be as bad as what I had imagined. The dental surgeon is gonna give me a consultation before I go in so I am still not fully certain if he’ll end up pulling two or three teeth. What I was told to expect is a root canal and that he will have to cut down into the back portion of my gums to get a very odd yet incomplete tooth that was broken some time ago from out of the upper back area of my mouth. All I can say to what I just typed spelling out my own dental situation is WOW.. as I have also half way pre-imagined some pain or stress to the situation before going in.
Thanks for the answers everyone.

don’t just say go to the doctor as he was wrong and I wore cpap for 3 years and they later found after years of my insisting the results from the sleep study were not right (as I only slept a half hour due to them testing me when I normally was awake (I havedelayed sleep phase syndrome and am up in daytime) and finally convincing them to repeat it when I normally slept) they found that for three years I was getting almost NO rem sleep or stage three or four restorative sleep and the setting was way too low and although I looked like I was sleeping had essentially no benefits from sleep and still had all symptoms of sleep apnea..so I don’t trust them..even after they upped setting– still no benefits I can detect except no morning headaches

Now I have a new machine that can be set higher and want to know HOW can I tell if it is TOO high. The tecnicians said I’d have chest pains and not be able to sleep or fall asleep..anything else or more details on this is what I m seeking. Thanks
